One of my better friends won't buy a car because it has a manual. "Because he doesn't want to learn." I told him it's easy but what ever...

I found a report online that was discussing optimization of shifting feel for manual transmissions by computer simulation. It was awesome. When I get some time, I'm going to pull it back up and write an article about how auto manufacturers are the benevolent care takers of the much loved but rarely embraced Manuel.

Because it takes time and effort to learn how to properly learn how to do it, with continuing effort after the fact. To many it seems unnecessary when an automatic version is available.

For the mass market it would be like me saying "Why is everyone so against non-sliced loafs of bread."

I told them that too. My dad just says, " I thought it would be great too, but then hated it".

I'm like dad... you haven't had an interesting car in years, maybe you're just not as into them as I am?

Would prefer a solid dct. Pedal placement is horrendous.

My dad and my grandfather both like cars with manuals. I wish some one would just buy a damn manual car. The only manuals in the family are the 2 Harley Davidsons.

Its the hero the American automotive society deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So we'll hunt for Manuel. Because Manuel can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent guardian. A watchful protector. Un oscuro GMC Caballero...

Was heavily considering one while I thought my car was dying. The only issue is that auto trans is an 8 speed... Even with the paddles that's a lot of shifting. They're short gears too so you're at 5k rpms before you even realize it.

The shifter itself I like and is fine. But the accelerator pedal is far too recessed. I had to use a pedal mount to fix it but still can't really heel/toe the car.

I am prepping to file a lemon law suit on the vehicle regarding ongoing steering issues, so while the car is enjoyable to drive I do regret my purchase. I should have bought an Ms3 instead.

Hm bummer. That's disappointing to hear. Hmmmmmm maybe I shouldn't get one... IDK. Don't like MS3 due to mileage.

I can't say I would recommend it, tbh.

Some guys have had zero issues, but many others have seen some serious problems. Couple blown turbos, significant steering problems, clutches going at 5,000 miles with skilled drivers, etc.

Also, FYI they are discontinuing that 2.0 liter EcoBoost motor after a short run.

I have only test driven an MS3, but I bet if you stay out of boost you can get some decent mileage out of it. The Focus mileage drops like a rock if you really get on the boost every chance you get. Though, I'm able to average roughly 25-26 mpg with mostly highway and some city driving.

I'd also check out a 2012-2014 WRX as well. While those cars can have some issues, it's definitely an option I looked at before getting the Focus.

WRXs hold their value extremely well. The Focus ST is dropping like a rock.

Also, most Ford dealers are generally clueless about the Focus ST. As an example, focusst.org is full of complaints from owners who went in for an oil change and were not given the proper weight and amount of oil for their Focus ST. Ford's system did not update with the required oil for the Focus ST vs the other Foci, so you have to always watch out for that.

I mean, the GTI is no model of reliability either. But, at least VW dealers know what the car is. Ford dealers have no clue about the ST.

YMMV, of course. I don't think a GTI is worth the price premium over a WORKING ST, tbh. At that price point, I'd be looking at a new WRX.

Because not everyone wants to deal with slipping the clutch at every stop sign/light, and if they drive in heavy traffic, have to ride the clutch repeatedly?

To each their own, autos are better in some types of vehicles. Everyone has their preferred driving style and vehicle, let it be.
